Five Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving

I moved this weekend, and let me tell you… it was a lot.Going from an apartment to a single home was exciting, beautiful, overwhelming, and honestly a full workout for the soul. So here are the top five things I wish I knew that would have made the whole experience smoother. I hope they help anyone who’s about to move into a new season too.

1. If you can hire movers, do it

This was the best decision we made.Professionals wrapped every piece of furniture and made sure everything arrived safely. It saved us time, stress, and probably a few emotional breakdowns.

If you’re moving from a small place to a bigger one, trust me… it’s worth every penny.

2. Pack a personal “carry on” for a full week

This is a lifesaver.Pack it like you’re going on a trip

  • Clothes for a week

  • Your skincare

  • Toothpaste

  • Shampoo

  • Shower stuff

  • Medications

  • Chargers

  • Sleepwear

This lets you function like a normal human while your house looks like a cardboard jungle.

3. Pack by room and label like your life depends on it

We packed in a rush, so we ended up with boxes that mixed kitchen things with office things and bedroom things. Chaos.

Here’s what I recommend

  • Pack one full room at a time

  • Label every box with what’s inside

  • Use a simple code or color system

    • Example a blue sticker for the primary bedroom, pink for the office, green for the kitchen

  • Tape a mini floor plan at the entrance for the movers so they know exactly where things go

This alone saves hours of confusion.

4. Plan for food and hydration

We didn’t eat the entire day. The movers didn’t eat. No one had water. It was rough.

Next time I would have

  • Sandwiches or wraps ready

  • Water bottles for everyone

  • Snacks

  • Maybe even disposable plates and a simple trash bag

Moving burns more energy than you think.

5. Keep your bedding and pillows with you

If you want one thing to feel normal your first night, it’s your bed.Pack

  • Sheets

  • Pillowcases

  • Pillows

  • A blanket

And take them with you in your own car.

We spent forever trying to find our sheets, and that first night was… not glamorous.

Other things I learned

You will need way more boxes than you think

We started with fifteen. We needed triple that.

Have a “cleaning essentials” bag

Keep this with you

  • Hand soap

  • Paper towels

  • Multipurpose spray

  • Trash bags

  • Scissors

  • Tape

  • Gloves

You’ll need these immediately.

Measure your new home before moving if possible

It makes planning where things go so much easier. We couldn’t measure beforehand, and now we’re figuring it out little by little.

Accept that the first few days will be messy

It’s normal.Moving is a process, and settling into a new home takes time.

“It’s been a crazy week, but I’m grateful. I’m learning to give myself patience, enjoy the fresh space, and take it one box at a time. If you’re moving soon, I hope these tips make your transition a little smoother.”
